Canine Assistants (CA) trains dogs to assist children and adults who have physical disabilities. The dogs are trained to turn lights on and off open and close doors pull wheelchairs retrieve dropped objects summon help and provide secure companionship. While these functions are vitally important in helping a person with disabilities the most impressive skill possessed by CA dogs is social rather than physical in nature. The dogs remove many of the barriers faced by the disabled when trying to gain acceptance in society. CA dogs are either young adults adopted from rescue organizations or are puppies raised at our Center for Independent Living. CA charges no fee for its services as that would place the benefits of CA's program out of reach of those who need the service most. Rather CA relies on the generosity of those who recognize the importance of independence. Contact CA for an application to be mailed to you. There is a waiting list based on need.
