AT tools for communication can help individuals who have difficulty with both understanding ideas and expressing themselves through verbal communication. Augmentative and alternative communication, AAC, AT tools can help individuals develop or maintain the ability to engage in activities and interact with others. AAC AT are available in a range of lite-tech to high-tech tools and devices.

The Tools for Life AAC Lab houses a wide range of AAC tools available for loan or for demonstration. Lite tech tools may include communication boards and books or wallets. There are mid-tech devices such as switches and static-display devices with voice output. Our available high-tech AAC tools include dedicated AAC devices and a variety of AAC apps used on an iPad.  

Because many individuals with communication difficulties may also have motor impairments, TFL also houses AT tools to increase access to computers and tablets used for AAC including switches, joysticks, head pointers and eye gaze. Tools for Life AT-AAC Specialists are available for consultation to assist in exploring the range of AT for communication and motor access to meet the various needs of those experiencing difficulties with communication.
