Health Literacy Month:
Social Media Toolkit

October is Health Literacy Month! The teams at CIDI & TFL have created content around this topic that all partner organizations can use for their social media. You can either click the button directly below to download an accessible word document with this information, or read on below.

This work was funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Purpose

October is Health Literacy Month. Health literacy means knowing how to find, understand, and use health information to make good choices for yourself and others. This can be difficult for many people for a variety of reasons.

People with low health literacy often have worse outcomes than people with high health literacy. Some of these bad outcomes include:

  • Medication errors
  • Challenges managing complicated health problems
  • Higher morbidity and mortality

Some older adults struggle with health literacy, especially those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia, or Alzheimer’s disease. TFL Gerontologist Sal Kibler has worked with the team to create helpful videos about health literacy for older adults who face these challenges.

Instructions

Tools for Life (TFL), Georgia’s Assistive Technology (AT) Act Program housed in the Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation (CIDI) at Georgia Tech, has created this helpful health literacy social media toolkit for the month of October. This toolkit features resources created by the TFL team and by other organizations.

The toolkit is divided into two sections:

  • What is Health Literacy?
  • Assistive Technology for Health Literacy

This toolkit is mostly text-based, featuring some links to videos on YouTube. You can also access the reels, closed caption files, final open captioned files, and the static graphics  here. You can use the text given as captions for social media sites like Instagram.
